Assignment 4 – Describing a Process

 

1)      Choose one of the topics below and write one long paragraph (10 – 15 sentences) that describes either how to do something or how something works.

2)      Your first sentence should be a well-defined topic sentence that catches the readers¡¯ attention.

3)      Be sure to use ¡°linking words¡± such as ¡°first,¡± ¡°next¡± and ¡°finally.¡±

4)      You may want to include helpful tips to make the process easier or the end product better.

5)      Do NOT use 1st person.

6)      You may use 2nd person (¡°you¡±) but use it sparingly.

7)      Make sure your instructions are clear.  (You can test the clarity of your writing by giving your paper to friend for a peer review.)

8)      In this style of ¡°technical writing¡± you should avoid long sentences that may cause confusion.

9)      Use present simple active and present simple passive verb tenses when describing the process.  Only use the 3rd person ¡°s¡± if the verb has a definite subject.

10)  Give your description a ¡°catchy¡± title.

11)  This assignment is 10% of your final grade. You will receive a grade on draft 2.
