Course Description

This course is designed to provide freshman and Sophomore English Majors with the academic writing skills that will help understand how to express ideas in a variety of writing styles.  The course will address organization, writing style, and cross-cultural issues.  Each student will be responsible for writing several assignments including a short essay. Students will write several drafts for each assignment and keep all drafts in a writing portfolio.  Only the final drafts will be graded.

 

Course Objectives

Students will:

l       Learn the basics of academic writing style.

l       Organize ideas.

l       Practice a variety of styles.

l       Learn how to revise their writing.

Grading

You are expected to attend every class and participate actively.  In-class activities are essential for your success in improving your writing skills.  If you are ill or unable to attend class, please contact the instructor.  Finally, it is important that you arrive at class on time so as not to interrupt the instructor or other students.
